The problem with chronic infection is biofilm. Biofilm is not a genetic resistance it is a physical resistance. Once bacteria matures at the site to the point to being the biofilm phenotype; they already have natural defenses against antibiotics in the host immunity. So the problem is chronic infection and the problem with chronic infection is biofilm phenotypes. We didn’t have tools to diagnose it; we didn’t have tools to treat it; and so as far as what the problem is we are looking for anti-biofilm agents… agents that either stimulate… block attachment of that bacteria; stimulate it to convert from biofilm phenotype back to the platonic; or other basic strategies to attack it from a biofilm model not from an acute infection platonic model.
